Neuroscience Research

book clubWhile research is not a formal component of the training program, residents are encouraged to consider research electives and formal research training leading to academic careers. Opportunities in research are available through the Center for Neuroscience and within the many ongoing research programs of Neurology faculty. Our graduates have pursued careers in practice and academic settings, and many have contributed as leaders in academic Neurology.

Faculty members of the Department of Neurology also are active contributors in a variety of graduate training programs at the University, including the University of Wisconsin Neuroscience Training Program. These activities include teaching graduate courses, directing graduate seminars, supervising research training of graduate and MD/PhD students, and serving in administrative capacities within interdisciplinary graduate programs. Research programs in learning and memory, neurodegenerative disorders, computational neuroscience, deep brain stimulation, genetics of epilepsy, epilepsy, epileptiform activity, epilepsy, pediatric epilepsy, neural plasticity, stem cell research, embryonic stem cells, Alzheimer's disease, as well as a number of clinical trials. Department faculty have parallel appointments in Anatomy, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, Kinesology, in the Waisman Center. Collaborative efforts are underway with on-campus investigators using a variety of state-of-the-art techniques, including advanced brain imaging facilities.
