How to Apply for Neurology Residency

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the UW Hospital and Clinics eligibility requirements.

Please be aware that the University of Wisconsin Department of Neurology will no longer accept COMLEX scores for admission.  All applicants must be in the process of completing the USMLE Steps 1-3. Prior to starting PGY-1, one must have passed steps 1 and 2 of the USMLE's.

We do not require any research experience, and the opportunity for research is available to you during the residency program. You will be required to obtain full Wisconsin licensure prior to beginning your PGY-3 year.

Recently Completed Application Year

  • All three PGY-2 positions beginning July 2008 have been filled.
  • We received over 450 applications last year and interviewed 50 applicants.

Upcoming Recruitment Season

This year we will offer 3 positions to begin neurology training at the PG2 level starting July 1st 2010.  2 of the 3 positions will include the PG1 year in Internal Medicine, whereas the other position will not include the PG1 year.  For the purposes of the match process, the University of Wisconsin has two program number listings:  1779180A0-Advanced (which does not include the PG1 year) and 1779180C0-Categorical (which does include the PG1 year.)  The decision to offer a candidate a PG1 year is made in conjunction with the Department of Internal Medicine.  All applicants are considered for both programs, so only a single application via ERAS is required.

We feel that each application should stand on its own merit.  Therefore, we have not established cut-off scores for USMLE, nor do we have a graduation year cut-off.  Research experience is not required.  International Medical Graduates are welcome to apply, and currently 4 of our 12 residents are IMG.  Please note that the University of Wisconsin is only able to support J-1 visa waivers.

We will start accepting applications via ERAS on September 1st and will continue to accept applications until October 31st. All applications are accepted through the ERAS/NRMP matching system. Through ERAS you will submit four letters of recommendation, your medical school transcripts and a personal statement with your application. Each applicant will be reviewed individually and only highly qualified applicants will be selected for an interview. Interviews typically are scheduled November, December and January for invited applicants.

Good Luck!  We hope to see you here in Madison.
